After 23 years in the education field--developing, constructing and directing a bilingual school with 740 students in South America, I knew it was time to look for a lifestyle with a little less stress and the chance to get back to my roots in the states. Finally in 1995, we confronted the challenge of living on 40 acres of farmland, (an original Ohio "Homestead") that had been in the family for over 200 years.  Having never been a farmer, as I muddled over the options ahead of us, never once did I think of alpacas!

Yet, like many new people in the industry, Amy J’s Homestead opened its mind and heart to the alpaca world in 1999 after seeing several animals at the county fair. Lots of research, educational seminars and chats with breeders followed before we purchased and brought home our first five. Since then we have been willingly immersed into an industry and lifestyle that has changed and inspired our lives.

Today Amy J’s Homestead, located in northwest Ohio, is a full service farm and the home to 60 Suri and Huacaya alpacas with show quality characteristics and strong genetics. We strive for perfection within our animals by carefully matching our females with the best possible studs, giving serious consideration to superior fiber characteristics (fineness, handle, density, coverage, staple length and uniformity), as well as outstanding crimp in Huacayas, luster and lock style in Suris. Excellent body conformation, reproductive history, unique coloring and a gentle disposition are also key factors. Those decisions, as well as the personalized daily care our animals receive, allow us to provide lots of options to clients and full service guarantees.

We live on the property with alpacas being our only business. We directly attend to the daily issues of alpaca nutrition and health care, farm management, layout, construction and expansion, accounting (financing, investment, tax benefits), and general farm services that include boarding, breeding, marketing, sales and transportation. Hired staff are part of an on-going training program and attend workshops and seminars on herd management, neonatal care and other related fields.
 
Over the years, we have learned to do everything from giving shots to trimming toenails, assisting our females with delivery, building shelters, stretching fence and vital farm layout techniques. We our proud to have found success in a very competitive regional and national show ring and to have become sufficiently knowledgeable of the fiber end-product to have offered our own fashion line to other breeders. It has been an amazing journey since we began in 1999. We have enjoyed not only the opportunities, travel and financial benefits of owning alpacas but have made amazing friends, found support and guidance within a strong and ever changing alpaca industry and have felt privileged to be the caretakers of these gentle, inquisitive and truly unique animals.

As alpaca owners, we have transported nationwide several times and know the special care your animals need. We use a 36 foot trailer that will comfortably carry animals without crowding. It is pulled by a top of the line F350 truck with adaptable suspension providing the most comfortable ride. The trailer has excellent ventilation with air conditioning/fans and heating as needed. Fold down ramps provide easy loading & unloading and adaptable compartments allow us to seperate males, females or age groups.
